Route 128 Intermodal Facility
Westwood/Dedham, Massachusetts
DMJM+HARRIS is prime consultant for this new intermodal
facility in suburban Boston. It is being developed as
a Design, Build, Operate, and Maintain (DBOM) project.
The Route 128 Intermodal Facility involves the redevelopment
of the Route 128 station, which is the most heavily
used suburban station on the entire MBTA system. The
new facility incorporates intermodal activities and
operations, combining bus, commuter rail, and Amtrak
functions.
The existing 2,800square foot station will be
replaced with a new 27,000square foot, three-level
facility; a pedestrian overpass; and new high-level
platforms with canopies. The station structure includes
passenger waiting, ticketing, and baggage areas; restrooms;
and MBTA and Amtrak offices. Retail spaces are provided
to enhance the convenience of passengers. A new four-level,
2,670-car garage will also be constructed. The station
and garage will be totally ADA compliant, providing
easy access to the station, platforms, and garage areas
for all passengers.
The project is within a state-designated area of critical
environmental concern. Accordingly, the drainage system
was designed to address both the quality and quantity
of the stormwater runoff, in compliance with the states
new stormwater management policy. An extensive community
outreach process was also undertaken to address local
concerns about traffic, water quality, and other design
issues. A combined Environmental Impact Report/Environmental
Assessment was prepared to comply with both the state
MEPA and federal NEPA processes.
