Pier 400 Container Terminal
Los Angeles, California

DMJM+HARRIS is providing construction management services for the centerpiece of a major expansion of the Port of Los Angeles—the Pier 400 Container Terminal. Serving as a gateway to the Pacific Rim, the Port of Los Angeles is one of the busiest ports in the world. The new container terminal is being constructed on 288 acres of reclaimed land in Los Angeles Harbor. The first phase of development includes three major elements: 4,000 feet of berth wharf, with 100-foot-gage crane rails; a backland container storage yard area; and the north and south gate complexes.

The 172-acre backland area is the container yard serviced by the gate complex, wharf, and intermodal facilities. Work in the backlands area ranges from earthwork and paving to water systems, fire protection, pavement marking, telecommunications systems, and security systems. The north and south gate complexes will contain the terminal buildings, employee parking, and yard equipment parking. Facilities include gatehouse and administration buildings, guard booths, sign bridges, truck scales, emergency generators, an intermodal yard maintenance and power equipment shop, a chassis maintenance shop, and marine buildings. When completed, the new container terminal will help the port keep pace with burgeoning cargo shipments.
