Los Angeles Export Terminal
Bulk Handling and Storage Facility, Backland Project
Port of Los Angeles, California
The Los Angeles Export Terminal (LAXT), also known
as the Pier 300 Dry Bulk Terminal, is located at Berth
301 in the Port of Los Angeles. The berthing facility
will accommodate dry bulk vessels with a capacity of
up to 250,000 deadweight tons (dwt). The new wharf,
along with its backland storage and handling facilities,
is designed for exporting coal to Japan and other countries.
The berthing project required the construction of a
1,200-foot-long wharf at Berth 301 as part of the LAXT
Bulk Handling and Storage Facility. Approximately 600,000
cubic yards of dredging were completed before the start
of wharf construction. The wharf consists of 225 large-diameter
steel piles and a concrete deck. The piles were fabricated
at Berth 108, and then barged to Berth 301 and driven
from a barge-mounted crane using a large pile-driving
hammer. The 100-foot-deep, 14-inch-thick cast-in-place
concrete deck will be placed on top of the piles.
For the backland project, we constructed improvements
on approximately 117 acres behind the wharf at Berth
301 and in the remote backland. These facilities will
be used for the storage of coal and dry bulk materials.
In addition to street work, demolition, site clearing,
construction of roadways, and utilities, the project
scope of work included the following major elements:
