In-City Generation Project
New York Power Authority
New York, New York
DMJM+HARRIS was selected by the New York Power Authority
to perform program and construction management for the
installation of 11 gas turbine generators at seven New
York City sites. Installed at the direction of the State
of New York, this additional generation capacity is
critical to maintaining system reliability and adequacy,
and an essential step in preparing the state for deregulation.
There are seven distinct gas turbine generator projects
within this $500 million program. The requirements for
geotechnical and structural work had to be determined
separately for each site. The locations were selected
utilizing constructibility criteria, such as proximity
to Con Edison substations, proximity of adequate natural
gas supply and city water, and site availability and
conditions. By deploying a 60-person project staff of
construction services and engineering personnel to work
with the many contractors and unions involved, DMJM+HARRIS
met the critical milestone date for substantial completion,
avoiding the widespread blackouts that were expected
to accompany the August 2001 heat wave.
