Master Energy Study, Logan International
Airport
Boston, Massachusetts
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has retained
Harris Energy Systems (HES, a division of DMJM+HARRIS)
as the energy services consultant for Logan International
Airport. To meet the Authoritys energy needswhich
are expected to grow by 60 percent as new buildings,
a people mover moving walkways, and computer resources
come on linewe have conducted a broad range of
evaluations, analysis, engineering, and design work.
A major work element within our scope of services was
the development of a master energy plan addressing Logan
Airports projected growth over the next 20 years.
Developed in tandem with Logan 2000, Massport's comprehensive
$2.4 billion airport modernization project, our strategy
examined cogeneration, energy utilization and efficiency,
and capital investment requirements. The master energy
plan analyzed utility industry dynamics, energy supply
options, alternatives to upgrades/reconstruction of
the central heating plant, and the regulatory and legislative
environment governing energy production and purchasing.
We demonstrated to the Authority how they could meet
or exceed the energy demands of Logan 2000, while reducing
planned capital investment by some $15 million. And
by positioning Logan as a wholesale purchaser of electricity,
we helped Massport save $10 million a year on energy
costsevery year.
