I-95 Roadway Access Improvements at Philadelphia International Airport
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

DMJM+HARRIS recently completed final design for the reconstruction of the interchange linking I-95 to the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). This $80 million project provides access to a new international terminal at PHL, the fastest growing airport in the nation. In addition to our responsibilities for all design, permitting, and construction documents for 3.5 miles of new access ramps and six bridges, DMJM+HARRIS also coordinated utility relocations; handled right-of-way acquisitions; coordinated mass transit service; and developed highway lighting, highway and airport signing, and landscaping.

The design and construction of the interchanges are being fast-tracked to coincide with the scheduled April 2002 opening of the international terminal. Design was completed in 10 months, and construction will be completed over a period of 18 months. Several innovative procedures are being used to meet this aggressive schedule. Most notable among these is separating the construction into three contract packages: foundations, structural steel procurement, and general construction.
