Grasslands Campus Distributed Generation Project
Westchester County Department of Public Works
Valhalla, New York

The Westchester County Department of Public Works (DPW) runs the Grasslands Campus in Valhalla, New York. Grasslands includes various county and private buildings, such as correctional facilities, the Westchester Medical Center, and the New York Medical College. Grasslands has continually expanded over the past 20 years, adding facilities that provide critical services to the people of New York State. As new buildings are built on the campus, the utilities infrastructure is expanded. The current peak electric load is over 11 megawatts (MW). Although the “on-campus” infrastructure is adequate for current and planned future load requirements, the utility transmission infrastructure in the area is overburdened.

The Westchester County DPW is working with the New York Power Authority to develop a distributed generation solution, including a power plant capable of not only meeting on-campus loads, but supplying excess power to the utility grid. The plant will also supply steam, hot water, and chilled water to a district energy system that supplies the campus buildings. As the implementation contractor for the New York Power Authority’s Energy Services Program, DMJM+HARRIS is providing project development and turnkey design/build services. Our services extend from design engineering through construction management and project closeout.
